Acts 2:45; Acts 11:27-30
What a brotherhood and fellowship prevailed in the Early expression of Christianity! They were indeed a beloved community, characterized by real agape love and compassion. It was real fellowship and Christian love that could be seen and felt, not just by those on the inside, but by those on the outside. In fact, Jesus cautioned His disciples by reminding them of the importance of not just talking, but actually demonstrating love. He pointedly stated, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another” (John 13:35). In His beloved community, love must always be tangibly expressed and demonstrated.
The church, as documented in the book of Acts, bears serious testimony to this fact. According to the writings of Luke, they are strikingly portrayed as a church that loved not only in word, but in deed. They were more than just a “word” church. Their words were convincingly backed up by their works. Their theology was constantly translated into every day, practical Christian living. They literally mirrored the teachings of Christ in their lives, but more so by their actions. For them, it was not just “dogma” but “praxis.” They married “word” to “works.” They combined “belief” with “lifestyle.” They realized that “kingdom lifestyle” must be practiced – lived out daily! Church, we cannot just tell them, we must show them! This is the Jesus way!
Concerning the Early Christians, Luke was most careful to point out that they did not only continue steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, but he was most diligent in describing what some of that doctrine looked like in actuality. He revealingly declares, “And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need” (Acts 2:45). What a radical expression of our Christian faith! How challenging to us – as we claim that we are the continuation of this same church! May the good Lord help us!
They were so serious about their Christian confession, that they genuinely did not want to see anybody suffer or lag behind. They liberally, deliberately sold their possessions and goods for the benefit and blessing of all. They felt that none should go hungry or be in any desperate need. They really felt they were their brother’s keeper. Theirs was a house of compassion, concern and caring.
Today, as we get ready to face another week of trials and challenges, I simply wanted us to remember our brothers and sisters in Haiti. One week ago they were devastated by a powerful earthquake, killing way over 2,000 people. They remain in urgent need of medical, food and sanitation assistance. Apart from the grave political unrest that continues to unfold, there is great fear of a public health disaster being generated, as a result of the sanitation situation. Many are still afraid to go inside and are sleeping on the ground in the streets. Many have no jobs, no water, no food, no homes – Nothing! About 53,000 homes were completely destroyed in the quake, with 77,000 more damaged, apart from the churches and other structures.
We are calling on all our churches and members to help! Please send your offerings and contributions to the Regional Office, as soon as possible. We will ensure your gifts and offerings are sent directly to help the nation of Haiti. Today we remember Haiti not just in “word” but in “deed.” “Then the disciples, every man according to his ability, determined to send relief unto the brethren which dwelt at Judea” (Acts 11:29). Thank you for remembering!
