PSALM 55:16
In the preceding verses of this Psalm, the Psalmist speaks of flying away and being at rest. He wishes he had wings of a dove just to remove himself from his enemies and the oppression of the wicked, and those who hated him, and desired his undoing and demise. He speaks of his heart being sorely pained within him and the terrors of death so overwhelming him that he is overcome by fearfulness and trembling. I think many of us can relate. Life can many times so overwhelm us and reduce us to fear and trembling. Yet we cannot run away and hide; we must courageously pull ourselves together and fight back!
It is most instructive how the Psalmist David responds to the vicious onslaught of evil from the unrelenting evil One. He combats it all by simply trusting in the Lord. In fact, these are the last six culminating words of this enlightening Psalm. It concludes with “. . . But I will trust in thee” (Psalm 55:23). It is sincere and personal. There is no indecisiveness nor uncertainty. We detonate all the enemy’s contrivances by simply calmly trusting in our God.
He pointedly declares, “As for me, I will call upon God; and the Lord shall save me” (v.16). He entertains no doubt. I trust that in 2026, we shall be so focused and determined. May the Almighty always give us the insight to know how to respond, and to know what part we must play, and to always have the personal fortitude to respond – “As for me . . .” Undoubtedly, we must respond as a church and a corporate body, but beyond all that it must be deeply personal – “As for me.” Before it gets to the household and others, I contend it must first begin with me, my resolve to fight and win, “I will call upon God”. I must do my part. Others cannot do this for me.
The more the Psalmist prays and makes up his mind to pray, is the more he is emboldened to pray. He prays not just one time and stops, but he now prays on a continual basis. He candidly states, “Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and He shall hear my voice” (v.17). What an amazing recipe for victory! Saints, we cannot just pray one time and desist.
Constantly, let us bombard the portals of glory until victory comes. Let us come boldly, repeatedly this year, to the throne of grace – evening, morning, and at noon. We do not pray less in 2026. We don’t just double the prayer. We triple the prayer. We dare to cry aloud. We are convinced o
ur God shall hear our voice. As for me, I am determined to pray more in 2026!
